A Swallow’s Tale

while building a nest
atop a tall tree,
in a dense forest,
a whistling swallow
disturbed two sparrows
who were singing back and forth
to one another

so curious were they
of his unique,
yet familiar, song,
they inquired
as to who was singing
such a familiar melody

the swallow explained that
the melody was not unique
and that many among him
sing the same song

soon the two sparrows squabbled
and eventually parted ways
and the poor swallow –
wishing he had kept his melody
to himself –
retreated into the forest,
never to be heard from
again
